Process to Become an Emergency Room Nurse

The founder of many freestanding emergency rooms throughout Texas, Jeanne Shipp is a registered emergency room nurse with over 15 years of experience. Jeanne Shipp earned her associate's degree in nursing from Lee College in Baytown, Texas in 2005.

Becoming an emergency room nurse involves mastering the skills of non-emergency care, before specializing in the field. The two primary nursing secondary options are the two-year associate degree in nursing and the bachelor's in nursing (BSN), which takes four years to complete. Once received, a prospective candidate must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become a registered nurse. Upon passing, they must receive certification with their area’s nursing board.

However, a registered nurse usually cannot enter into emergency care immediately. They must acquire hands-on experience in bedside care first, before their employer allows them to work in the ER. Additional certifications may also improve their job prospects. A widely-recognized certification, Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), for example, only permits RNs with at least two years ER experience to enter the program.
